The land is fertile, with several wineries in operation. In Crawford, which was originally part of Montgomery, bed-and-breakfasts are situated near vineyards, perfect for weekend getaways.
The mountains are also rich in minerals. Mount Hope boasts considerable mineral deposits and features sev- eral mining companies near town.
Outdoor activities abound, too. In Chester, trails are available for cross-country skiing and hiking. The Town Park provides a backdrop for an annual Fireworks Show, Movie Nights in the Park, and more. As the second larg- est township in the county, Deer Park features plenty of scenic views among the lakes, streams, rivers, and mountains. Outdoor activities in the area go beyond the usual hiking and fishing and include hunting, canoeing, rafting, camping, and birdwatching. Port Jervis, nearly 100 miles north of New York City, features activities on the Delaware and Neversink Rivers. Activities include kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and swimming.
Outdoor activities continue in the county seat of Gos- hen, which is also home to the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. The local chamber of commerce hosts a town festival annually with attractions and activities, including arts and crafts to hayrides. One of the year’s biggest outdoor events takes place in Tuxedo, as thou- sands enjoy the New York Renaissance Faire.
Located near the Appalachian Trail, Warwick capi- talizes on outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, apple picking, and downhill skiing. Wineries, antiques shops, and artisan centers round out the ar- ea’s attractions.
Golf takes full advantage of the region’s expansive landscapes. Wallkill, which is in the center of the county, owns a golf club that has been recognized not only for its championship-caliber course but also its pro shop.
Calling all artists. Although the entire Hudson River intrigues artists, Cornwall is especially enticing. Just look at Storm King Mountain. Its natural beauty was captured by Hudson River School painters, and authors Nathaniel P. Willis, Lewis Beach, and Amelia Barr.
Located on the southern border of the county, the state’s border with New Jersey, Greenville has breath- taking views of the Catskill Mountains. The small- town atmosphere adds to the charming feel of the area. Woodbury is also as pretty as a painting with the county’s highest point, Schunnemunk Mountain, at nearly 1,700 feet.
Middletown’s art scene is centered on the historic Paramount Theatre. The downtown district, which is alive with eclectic restaurants and small shops, is a family-friendly location, and includes The Interactive Museum and Orange County Fair.
Above: One of the region’s most popular outdoor events of the year, the New York Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo draws thousands of eager attend- ees from all over the state and beyond.
