When you live in Westchester, there’s no need to travel to Manhattan to experience world-class culture, sports, entertainment and cuisine.
PERFORMANCE VENUES
With 16 cultural and performing arts venues, the county offers wide-ranging leisure and entertainment options. Here’s a
brief sampling:
The Capitol Theatre is a historic theatre located in the village of Port Chester. Built in 1926, the 1,800-seat facility operates as a concert venue, hosting such acts as Neil Young, Herbie Hancock, Duran Duran, Blondie and Pat Benatar.
A National Historic Landmark, The Music Hall (Tarrytown) features acts such as R&B legend Mavis Staples, Celebrity Chef Lidia Bastianich, The Moth Podcast Radio Tour, the 80’s rock band the Psychedelic Furs and children’s musician Laurie Berkner.
Based in Pleasantville, The Jacob Burns Film Center is a non-profit educational and cultural organization that hosts 200,000 annual visitors to its art house theater. Showcasing independent, documentary and world cinema, the center also offers Media Arts and communications education programming.
SPORTS
DINING
There’s no shortage of renowned chefs in Westchester, with many being graduates of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Chef Peter Kelly’s acclaimed X2O Xaviars on the Hudson
in Yonkers, and Port Chester’s Tarry Lodge, a joint venture of celebrity chefs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich, are just a couple of examples of the world-class dining the county offers.
At 42, perched atop the Ritz-Carlton, Westchester in downtown White Plains, a team of chefs— including Chef Anthony Goncalves — create exceptional culinary offerings to match the restaurant’s stunning views.
Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which offers farm-to-table delights at a working farm formerly owned by the Rockefeller estate, was named 2016 Restaurant of the Year, by the prominent foodie blog, Eater.
For those seeking something a bit more exotic, Persian, Korean, Turkish and Ethiopian cuisine are just a few of the diverse ethnic dining options available throughout the county.
HISTORY
Graced by unique and historic architecture, the county is home to 16 National Historic Landmark sites and 196 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Historic Hudson Valley, an education non-profit, offers a host of educational and seasonal programs at its landmark sites, including Croton’s Van Cortlandt Manor, Irvington’s Sunnyside Estate, Sleepy Hollow’s Philipsburg Manor and the John Jay Homestead in Katonah.
The Westchester Knicks are the exclusive NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, a charter member of the NBA and one of the most iconic names in professional sports. Based at the Westchester County Center, this minor league NBA team provides hardcore basketball fans with access to NBA prospects being groomed to impact the next level.
The Hudson Valley Renegades are a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays. A member of the New York–Penn League, a Class A Short Season league, the Renegades play at Dutchess Stadium in the town of Fishkill, New York.
FINE ARTS
Westchester offers art lovers a lot to love. Browse African and contemporary art at Purchase’s Neuberger Museum of Art or explore the sculpture garden of the Katonah Museum of Art. At Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico Hills, art and history buffs can experience works by Picasso, Warhol and other celebrated artists.
