to help it expand, through incentives, as well as providing guidance and recom- mendations to emerging companies.” Why Westchester?
“I live in the county and am interested in building within the local communities. From a cost perspective, it makes sense to build and operate the company here compared to New York City. Our
corporate offices in Harrison and our laboratory in Valhalla at BioInc@NYMC, on the campus of New York Medical College. BioInc has been a great home for us to grow in as we were able to start in a small lab and scale up our space as needed. That approach allowed us to be efficient with our spending and keep our organizational footprint right
sized, both of which are key for a new entrepreneurial venture. We plan to graduate from BioInc@NYMC in the next year and find a bigger home for Sapience in Westchester County.”
Looking Ahead
Sapience recently announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Fast Track Designation to its lead program, ST101, for the treatment of advanced melanoma. This is the second FTD designation for ST101, which previously received an FTD for the treatment of glioma (brain cancer). “2022 promises to be a great year for Sapience,” says Kappel. “Earlier this year ST101 moved from Phase 1 to Phase 2 (clinical trial), we have additional programs progressing through our development pipeline, and we’ve already made some key hires. We are excited to continue our growth this year and make additional impacts on patients' lives."

In April 2020, shortly after Westchester became the epicen- ter for COVID-19 in the U.S., former Google executive Joe Rosenberg, launched Canopy – a company seeking to address the unprecedented shortage of N95 respirators.
