Talent means a special ability that allows someone to do something well. I don’t think you can learn it – it is innate – not everyone has it (there is only one Michael Jordan). In my field, legal skills and work ethic are very important and training can improve both. But the truly talented are those who take the skills, the work ethic and their confidence and are able to handle, interact and provide excellent legal products to a variety of clients. Because that person needs to be able to work with the difficult client and the easy client, the difficult deal and the complex deal, as well as colleagues with all types of personalities.

We recruit people with a true entrepreneurial spirit, intellectual curiosity and the competitive edge to execute with excellence. Everyone at Mastercard understands the importance of providing value to stakeholders, whether they are merchants, banks or employees. At the heart of it all, we hire people who act with integrity and respect, who encourage openness and working together as one to benefit all. This approach and type of employee is key to our business success and to fostering the inclusive work environ-
ment that has been created here.

At Marriott, we look for reliability and a compelling work ethic in our prospective employees. Each shift depends on the shift before them, so dependability is impor- tant. You can teach the technical aspects of a job, but you can’t teach friendliness and hospitality. When you are trying to solve a customer service issue, communication – particularly the ability to articulate your thoughts verbally – is key. The Westchester la- bor market offers every level of professional that our business requires: not just entry- level, but a wide range of seasoned, educated and sophisticated professionals as well.
WESTCHESTER’S WORKFORCE: SMART AND SKILLED WORKERS THAT DRIVE BUSINESS SUCCESS
“Access to a highly-qualified and educated workforce” was the top consider- ation of business owners seeking to relocate or expand, according to a recent study conducted by The Westchester County Office of Economic Development.
Westchester residents are among the most educated in the United States, with 47 percent of residents over the age of 25 holding a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Westchester’s highly-qualified managerial, professional and technical workers:
• fuel today’s information-intensive industries.
• enjoy unemployment rates that are lower than that of New York City, New York State and
the nation as a whole.
