Westchester County offers so much to see and do that it’s hard to choose just a few can’t-miss reasons for you to visit. But certain special places and certain special experiences seem to earn mention again and again.

Lyndhurst
A recent PBS special calls this Gilded Age estate overlooking the Hudson one of 10 homes that “changed America.” And Forbes magazine named it among the nation’s most beautiful mansions. With castle-like details, a four-story tower, arched windows, vaulted ceilings and stained-glass accents, it’s a home fit for a king — or a railroad magnate like 19th-century owner Jay Gould (he also added the country’s largest greenhouse to the estate). Take a guided tour of the mansion, including the intimate, second-floor gallery that displays priceless works from the Gould collection. Then stroll the grounds (the gazebo in the 1911 rose garden is the perfect spot for a wedding!). Ongoing renovations are adding new attractions — access to the tower, a restored 1913 laundry room and a bowling alley dating back to the 1800s.
Walter’s Hot Dogs
A grilled “dog” with mustard on
a toasted bun — it might just be America’s official meal. Since 1919, Westchester has had one of the very best at Walter’s in Mamaroneck. Don’t trust us — Thrillist.com put this blend of beef, pork and veal (grilled, naturally, in a “secret sauce”) on its 2015 tops in the U.S. list. And that’s just one of many accolades for this classic, served by the same family for four generations. Top off your treat with an Egg Cream, a hard-to-find soda fountain classic, or a Cowboy Shake, with six scoops of homemade ice cream. Look for the copper-roofed, pagoda-style roadside stand and get ready for a tastebud treat!
