  TWandering in Wayne
he story of Wayne begins in the early 19th century, when the Pennsylvania Railroad built its main line heading northwest from Philadelphia out into the countryside. That main line quickly became the Main Line, a collection of communities known for their majestic country estates owned by members of Philadelphia’s social elite.
Today, Wayne continues to be one of the wealthiest communities in the nation and regularly sits at the top of many “best of” lists, but that doesn’t mean it lacks hometown charm.
Art lovers can stretch their creative muscles at
the Wayne Art Center through classes, events and exhibitions. (The center’s spacious studios allow for physical distancing. See for a class schedule and COVID-19 guidelines.) The Art Center’s gallery shop is open for shopping by appointment.
Cinema aficionados will want to admire the Anthony 10 Spring/Summer 2021
Wayne Theater’s distinctive terra cotta façade — just as guests did when the theater first opened in 1928.
(At the time of writing, the theater had not yet reopened for showings — check locations/anthony-wayne-theater for updates.)
Great examples of soaring Main Line architecture and landscaping include Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden and Chanticleer. (Note that Chanticleer requires anyone arriving by car to make a parking reservation ahead of time.)
