   women in the kitchen
While spring is a time to celebrate new beginnings, it’s also an occasion to celebrate those responsible for many new beginnings: women. March is Women’s History Month and in recognition of this we bring you the stories of four women shaping the food industry in the Hudson Valley.
Two of these women have managed to succeed in the restaurant industry, a
male-dominated environment, where fewer than 7 percent of heads chefs and restaurant owners are women. Patti Jackson (on our cover), for example, was the owner of Michelin-starred Delaware and Hudson in Williamsburg, and is now enjoying success as the chef at Kitchen at Shale Hill Farm in Saugerties.
The farming industry, which traditionally has also
been a male-dominated world, is still that way, but the
last Census of Agriculture showed that there are not only more women in farming, in general, but more women own farms. In this feature, writer Sabrina Sucato speaks with two of these women. James Beard Leadership Award- winner Karen Washington, from the Bronx, lives part time in Orange County and founded and runs Rise & Root Farm with three other women. Washington also founded the first Black Farmers and Urban Growers Conference and speaks regularly about the challenges minorities face in the farming industry.
On these pages, you’ll also find our bi-annual Hudson Valley Restaurant Week directory, which grows longer every season. This spring’s HVRW is March 16–29, and
at press time, included more than 200 restaurants from A–Z, and then some. Eateries in eight Hudson Valley counties and beyond are presenting delicious and inspired three-course meals at incredible prices. In this directory and at hudsonvalleyrestaurantweek.com you’ll find many newcomers, as well as tried-and-true favorites.
As I learned first-hand during the fall, it is a two- week period anticipated and enjoyed by many. In fact, one woman even asked if we could it make it longer. “Restaurant Week is already two weeks, twice a year,”
I reminded her. “What more do you want?” “I don’t know,” she answered. “I just find it hard to pick only 28 restaurants to try in 14 days.”
