Flushing is the capital of Asian-American commercial, residential, and social life in New York City and the entire Eastern Seaboard. The former Dutch and English colonial settlement is currently home to a “Little Taiwan” and “Koreatown,” along with pockets of Indian, Mainland Chinese, Southeast Asian, and Spanish-speaking influences.
The diverse neighborhood’s heart is the hustling-and-bustling Main Street, where countless hotels, markets, performance venues, restaurants, and stores operate. Large shopping centers include Arcadia Mall, Hong Kong Supermarket, New York Food Court, New World Mall, and Queens Crossing.
Step away from Main Street and explore six historic houses, the old- est Hindu temple in North America, a Quaker property with NYC’s oldest house of worship, various parks, and several performance venues.
Get there: Flushing is easily accessible via the 7 train and LIRR, both which have Main Street stations.
Get culture: Flushing Town Hall presents high-quality, award-winning performing and visual arts programs, including theater, jazz, classical, and world music, dance, puppetry, exhibitions, and family programs in its 308-seat concert hall. The Romanesque Revival building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972.
Address: 137-35 Northern Blvd; www.flushingtownhall.org.
Get culture: Located on the Queens College campus, the Kupferberg Center for the Arts encompasses three venues: the acoustically perfect LeFrak Concert Hall, which can hold about 500 guests; the Colden Auditorium, which has capacity for 2,143; and the 476-seat Irving and Susan Wallack Goldstein Theater.
Kupferberg presents a wide range of entertainment to about 350,000 patrons each year, including classical music, jazz, comedy, dance, seminars, conferences, and children’s events. Billy Joel, Gladys Knight, Janis Joplin, Cyndi Lauper, the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Boys’ Choir, and Yo-Yo Ma are among the entertainers who have performed there. Plus, the venue can be rented.
Address: 65-30 Kissena Blvd; www.kupferbergcenter.org.
Get culture: Flushing Meadows Corona Park is the fourth-largest public space in NYC. With 898 acres, it hosts a wonderful mix of flora, fauna, waterways, paths, athletic facilities, and statues. It’s also home to the following cultural/recreational venues: Citi Field; New York Hall of Science; Queens Botanical Garden; Queens Museum; Queens Theatre; Queens Zoo; USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center; and World’s Fair Marina.
