Ships Named "Maryland"
In last issue's "Maiden Voyages,"
reference was made to the BBC
"Maryland" perhaps being the first cargo
vessel named after the state. However, an
attentive reader noted that the USNS
"Mission San Carlos," a tanker launched
in 1944, was converted into a combination
train ferry and container ship in the 1960s
and renamed the Seatrain "Maryland."
She carried cargo
ast
and west coasts and to Vietnam.
