Turning Limitations into Opportunities
At the start of 2020, the North Carolina Forestry Association (NCFA) planned on tackling its first full TreeLine series, implementing a new strategic plan, reexamining education camps and exploring new ways to make your forestry association better and stronger. To add to the excitement, Aly and I were on the verge of becoming new parents. Enter the COVID-19 pandemic.
The novel coronavirus introduced much uncertainty around the way that we all do life. At the onset of the pandemic, the NCFA worked with its members, other trade associations and Governor Roy Cooper’s office to ensure that members could remain open for business. Many of our members and their companies developed protocols to keep people safe and healthy.
At the NCFA, months of scheduling were wiped clean, creating opportunities
for new ideas. Our education committee and Programs Manager Amy Juliana are thinking outside the box and developing programs to not only maintain the NCFA’s impact, but to increase it moving forward.
The NCFA also began to engage in the revision process for the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. Several of our members have spent much of their efforts over the past five years working with various stakeholder groups and the United States Forest Service to ensure that the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests are managed for multiple uses moving forward. Thanks to our western membership, the NCFA was able to file substantive comments in late June. We will continue to monitor the plan throughout its
