A Presidential Tribute
Mark Meister, the highly esteemed executive director of the Medical Society of
Delaware (MSD), will retire next month. He has successfully guided MSD
with his unmitigated commitment to
the causes of physicians and patients
in the State of Delaware. His calm demeanor, tactful diplomacy, and expert leadership have been essential to our Society during his near 30-year tenure, and he leaves MSD as a strong and successful advocacy organization that strives to make physicians’ lives easier. Anyone who knows Mark knows that
he is a humble man. He is not one for the spotlight. Certainly, he would not approve of this president’s page.
Mark received his bachelor of science and master of library sciences degrees from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. He then went on to work as executive vice president for a professional standards review organization and a 40,000 member IPA-model HMO. Mark served as executive director for the New Haven County Medical Association before coming the Medical Society of Delaware in April of 1989.
He has served on the boards for many of the MSD subsidiary corporations, as
well as the Blood Bank of Delmarva, Delaware Health Information Network, and Delaware Health Care Commission. All the while he has skillfully steered MSD and built a solid reputation
as the go-to person for governors, congresspersons, and senators for health care issues in the State of Delaware.
Mark has received numerous awards
for his leadership including the MSD President’s Award in 1999 and 2016. In 2011, he was honored with the American Medical Association Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award. In his nomination application, Dr. David Bercaw (President 2010-2011) wrote the following: “[Mark’s] approach to problem solving many of the statewide health
care issues focuses upon a collegial and collaborative model, while doggedly defending the role of the physician as
the originator and orchestrator of patient care. His understanding of health care reform, health information technology, medico-legal issues, and population-based health issues allows him to be a trusted and valuable resource as Delawareans forge new public health policy. Through his style, Mark has earned the respect
of the physicians of Delaware, hospital administrators, insurance administrators, and state and federal legislators. Mark
