equipment, offices and meeting areas to burgeoning firms; it currently has three anchor tenants (DuPont, Chemours and Incyte) and six early-stage companies (Prelude Therapeutics, Adesis, NiKang Therapeutics, STRIDE, Napigen and ACROBiosystems).
“We’re our own Silicon Valley here in some ways,” says Delaware Innovation Space President and CEO WILLIAM PROVINE. “The mix of companies we have here will be constantly optimized as we move forward. Some will turn from the small or medium-size, early- stage companies and eventually become anchor tenants, and some will graduate and hopefully move down the street, and developers will build them a nice new home, so they’ll be part of the community.”
UD’s Mike Bowman, who also serves as president of the Delaware Technology Park and director of the state’s Small Business Development Center, says Delaware’s efforts to bolster the STEM workforce must continue to start in the classroom. “Organic growth of our businesses is the best way for Delaware to go forward; therefore, we’re looking at a lot of new, early-stage companies dealing in the life sciences,” Bowman says. “Most of the life science companies we deal with require laboratory space, so they not only have principal science and technology people, they also have technicians — and there’s a range of jobs in these life science companies. But at the bottom of it all, whether you’re a high school grad or, hopefully, at least a community college grad, or even better, a university grad — a fundamental grounding in science, technology, math and engineering is critical to the workforce development of the future. The big companies will always be seeking these kinds of graduates, and from a job-retention point of view and a growth point of view, we see that STEM is at the heart of it.” ID
