According to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Sheppard had
a 16.1% probability of winning a start.
In a career that spanned 60 years, he had 3,426 wins, and his charges had earnings
of $88,679,925. He retired as the National Steeplechase Association’s all-time leading trainer by wins (1,242) and earnings ($24,902,442). As a mentor to up-and- coming trainers, Sheppard’s steady hand aided in the development of Graham Motion (winner of the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup with Animal Kingdom), Leslie Young (last year’s champion steeplechase trainer with 37 wins) and Keri Brion (leading jumps trainer for 2022 by earnings, with more than $1.1 million in purses).
