                FOOD & DRINK
The beauty of smoothies is that
you can choose the amount of ingredients that suits you. Your only limit is the size
of your blender.
Though wine is the basis for many summer drinks, some can’t imagine
any variety (except perhaps those that sparkle) in cocktails and other mixed drinks. Blueberries are a great fruit for
a white-wine spritzer. Their small size allows you to sip your drink and eat it too. With spritzers, you can also choose your proportion of liquids, but a half-glass of white wine poured over ice with a couple of shots of seltzer works well. Then toss in a half-handful of juicy berries.
Just off Route 202 north of the Delaware line, Penns Woods Winery is known for its summery sangrias. The winery’s sales and social media director, Raechel Kuehn, offers these recipes:
Summer Sangria
• 1 pineapple, diced into cubes
• 2 16-ounce containers of
strawberries, halved
• sugar to taste
• 1 bottle of Penns Woods rosé or
pinot grigio
Mix all ingredients in a large container and refrigerate overnight. Adjust sugar to taste, strain out the fruit and serve over ice.
Citrus & Mint Wildflower White Sangria
• 5 lemons
• 5 limes
• bundle of fresh mint
• 1 cup of sugar with more to taste
• 1 bottle of Wildflower White wine Juice lemons and limes into a large container. Muddle the mint and add to
the mix with the sugar and wine, mix well and refrigerate overnight. Strain and serve over ice.
As the summer sun sinks over the horizon, Michael Majewski, managing partner of Brandywine Prime in Chadds Ford, suggests sipping this:
Italian Pear Martini
• 1 1⁄2 ounces of Absolut pear vodka • 1⁄2 ounce of pear, pureed (fresh
or frozen)
• 1 ounce of Limoncello
• Splash of sweet-and-sour mix Shake well on ice and strain into a martini glass.
And if you truly enjoy being a cocktail chef, you can make your own pear vodka. Simply find a large, lidded glass container and add six ripe pears cut into chunks. Pour in a bottle of vodka, cover it and refrigerate for a week (or until your patience runs out), shaking occasionally. Strain and rebottle. TH
