Upon landing, we grabbed our bags and hiked a mile to waiting Zodiac inflatable boats that ferried us out to the expedition ship Ocean Nova, our home for the duration. Nothing can quite prepare you for the sight of an iceberg 11 miles long floating off the peninsula. The boat captain noted that it was the 23rd largest object on the face of the planet. We sailed along this tabular wall of ice, its face rising about 250 feet above the ocean’s surface.
For seven days, we headed south along the coast, stopping at least once daily. Our group was primarily interested in photographing sea ice, using the Zodiacs to cruise the flows for hours at a time. We’d make occasional landings and walk among the native adelie, chinstrap, gentoo and magellanic penguins. The images here document our adventures.
