gatherings. We were conscious of it and trying to be thoughtful about it.”
It would be just the two of them. “We wanted to have grandparents and immediate family with us, but it was clear that was not going to be feasible,” Mike says.
A live Zoom wedding allowed them to interact with their guests. Attendees received custom gift boxes with champagne glasses, confetti poppers, a wedding program, a copy of the ketubah ( Jewish marriage contract), brownie mix and hand sanitizer. “The morning and midday leading up to [the ceremony], people were sending us pictures,” says Mike. “They’d made setups for themselves.”
On May 24, 2020, guests from as far away as Europe joined in the celebration. The couple stood in front of a green screen in their home, allowing for a virtual background with family members beside them. Presided over by longtime family friend Rabbi Barry Diamond, the two exchanged vows in a modified Jewish wedding that
incorporated Sarah’s religious background. “He offered us lots of humanistic versions of things, and our ketubah wove together [many different elements] to make it feel like it fit for us,” she says.
The virtual reception featured a first dance, toasts given by Sarah’s father and Mike’s youngest brother, and a brownie-cutting ceremony. Using custom bouquets interspersed with fresh fruit, Sarah transformed their living room into a truly special space. Afterward, families broke into smaller groups for more personal visits. “We were by ourselves, but what I liked the most about the whole day is how connected I felt to everybody,” says Sarah.
The couple drove to Philadelphia that evening, where Sarah’s parents had booked them a stay at a hotel. There they discovered a scrapbook filled with messages of love and congratulations from friends and family. Mike’s siblings also created a video of well wishes. “It was just a special time for the two of us to be together and to have the really incredible surprises from our loved ones,” says Mike. TH
