and ensure a top-flight fan experience. “[The corporation’s] help was crucial to the bid,” says Gardner.
Although Gardner’s attendance estimate falls well short of the 120,000 that show
up in England, it is the 5 Star’s first year in Maryland. The number could double in
the future. The prize money is certainly worthy of notice, and that should attract top riders from across the globe—and that’s what it’s about.
Martin says the 5 Star will be a tougher challenge than the Olympics, thanks to
a longer cross-country course and higher jumps. “Only a small group of horses and riders can actually compete at this level,” he says. “It takes years to qualify a rider and
a horse. You need thousands of hours of training and fitness—and a little bit of luck.”
Even the European riders—who tend
to be a little particular when it comes to courses—will be impressed. “They’ll think it’s
tough,” says Heard. “The course designer has designed courses overseas, and he’s tough.”
Heard is definitely energized by the opportunity. So are Martin and other top riders, including 2021 Olympian Phillip Dutton, who’s been an enthusiastic supporter of the
5 Star. “To have a 5 Star here in Maryland is unbelievable for the sport of eventing,” Martin says. “An event of this caliber puts Fair Hill at the ultimate level of the equestrian world.”
