 EDITOR’S NOTE
 Hidden History
In the late 1970s, Jim Graham began work on his senior thesis at Washington College. His subject was the founding of the DuPont company. “I spent many days at the library at Hagley,” says
The Hunt’s contributing editor. “I was never a great student, and pouring over books really wasn’t my thing. As much as I loved history and the history of the Brandywine Valley. I needed to get out of the building on any number of occasions. So I walked around the property.”
Graham would sometimes find himself in Hagley Museum’s graveyard, hoping to channel some creative energy. On one of those days, he ambled down the hill and stumbled upon the neglected circa-1920s Crowninshield Garden built on the terraced ruins of Eleutherian Mills. It’s the same “lost garden” featured in this issue.
“It was magical for me,” Graham recalls. “I remember having my camera and taking pictures of some of the statuary that was still out at the time. It sparked a feeling for the place that I still carry.”
Years later, Graham accepted an assignment from Colonial Homes magazine to shoot the gardens at Tryon Palace in New Bern, N.C. He had three days to capture the essence of the official residence and administrative headquarters for North Carolina’s British governors from 1770 to 1775.
“I kept looking at the statuary that lined the walks of the garden—I knew that somehow I knew it,” says Graham. “I asked the curator, and she said it had come from a garden somewhere in Delaware.”
A place called Hagley. “It was some of the same statuary that
had been in the Crowninshield Garden,” he says, still with a hint of amazement. “Here I was at home—but in Carolina. In some ways, it inspired me as I worked.”
Today, when he visits the garden at Hagley, Graham can see nothing but possibilities. “I’m so encouraged by all the hard work Paul Orpello (Hagley’s director of gardens and horticulture) and his team have put in,” says Graham. “I’m hopeful for the day I can walk around in the ‘gem of the creek.’”
