RAINFALL MAJOR / LIKELY
Growing together in Georgia
3/2/2023
11:59:24 AM
While extreme weather conditions pose a tremendous risk to timber loss, heavy rainfall poses risk to forestry operators themselves. It’s critical to use Best Management Practices (BMPs) by utilizing culverts, water bars and turn- outs to direct excess water and to have an appropriate, dedicated budget for road infrastructure. Operators should consider timing of harvests compared to rainfall periods, and loggers should perform close-outs during harvest instead of waiting until the end.
Looking Forward
The good news is that a major way to combat climate change is to manage forests well. For SFI-certified land- owners, the SFI forest management standard requires several practices with direct climate benefits, such as ensuring forests remain as forests and requiring practices that reduce the like- lihood of wildfire or invasive, damaging species. The Georgia SIC’s guidance for landowners (available for download or as a hard copy by request at sfi-georgia. org) covers these considerations and more for any landowner wishing to mitigate climate change impacts.
Vigorous and healthy forests that are sustainably managed are more resilient to the impacts of climate change. By taking a proactive approach to managing forests, we can reduce
the risk of forest damage and loss
of productivity and ensure that our forests continue to provide important ecological, economic and social benefits for generations to come. ■
