There are three main categories of improved seedlings on the market today. In increasing order of performance:
OPEN POLLINATED:
These are seedlings produced from uncontrolled crosses. The pollen provided for the seed is crossed between a known mother tree and many select father trees within the same area, or orchard.
CONTROL POLLINATED:
The process of manually pollinating the seed cones of pines to produce full siblings. This is accomplished
by bagging the seed cones before pollination occurs and injecting each bag with pollen from a selected tree.

VARIETAL:
These are pines produced through cloning. Cloning bypasses sexual reproduction and seed production. All of the clones produced from one genetic source will be genetically identical.
