preventing that from ever happening.” Even the best intentions can go awry, however, as landowner Mark Thompson found out on his Putnam County acreage when an adjacent landowner decided
to harvest.
“I met with the loggers before they
started, because I was worried there might be a problem with my driveway.” Sure enough, a month later when harvesting was underway and rain was falling, mud became an issue on his property next door.
“So I called Harold and he came in and did all he could. They ended up changing procedures. Harold really helped me out,” Thompson said.
West is modest about the skills he’s gained during his career and reserved about acknowledging the very real impact he’s had on Georgia’s water resources. His concern, instead, is for the future, as fewer foresters queue up to follow in his footsteps.
“You can see, it’s hot out here, and there’s a lot to it,” he said. “There’s not too many young people who’ll get out here to do this work. You’ve got to have a bit of passion for it.”
But the importance of the work will always remain.
“These pieces are in place to protect landowners downstream, and upstream where they’re impacted by someone else. They’re here to protect everyone.”
