40 The Deep Creek Experience
“After 35 years in the Maryland hospital industry, I made a decision that I liked the ambiance of Garrett County, the weather, the living conditions, the sense of community. I quit my job in Baltimore and just moved out here. I took some time off to sell my house in Baltimore and build a house here in Garrett County. I didn’t really seek the job at Mountain Laurel. I saw it advertised in the Republican [newspaper] and just applied. I would say
my favorite thing about Garrett County is,
the sense of community out here is strong. I’m so impressed by the commitment to volunteerism and the amount of work that we do to strengthen the community bonds and strengthen what we do for our community. I also embrace the climate here, and just the nature and beauty that we have in the Deep Creek area. The other bonus is a lack of traffic. There is no such thing as a traffic jam here.”

be taken in person at the high school or on the college campus, but also online. Because Garrett College is an accredited institution, the earned credits will transfer to any college or university the student plans to attend.
Unlike many two-year community schools, Garrett offers on-campus housing on the McHenry campus, with a dormitory and apartment building that can accommodate about 200 students.
Reflecting its geographic location and employment opportunities, Garrett College offers associate degrees in Adventure Sports Management and Natural Resources & Wildlife Technology. Students can also complete associate’s degrees in in-demand fields like Addictions Counseling, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering and Nursing.
In 2018, Garrett College opened a new, state- of-the-art STEM building. The building includes classrooms and laboratories for physics, biology, chemistry, engineering and robotics.
Over the next few years, a Community Education and Performing Arts Center will be rising on campus. The project broke ground in the summer of 2020 and is scheduled to be complete by spring 2022.
