 G arrett County boasts some of the top health care facilities in the
region. There is easy access to the most advanced care possible, from a trauma center at Garrett Regional Medical Center to maternity facilities to wellness programs. Garrett is also home to award-winning services. In 2018, the Garrett County Health Department’s Population Health, Innovation and Informatics Unit was presented with the Maryland Rural Health Achievement Award for its innovative Garrett County Planning Tool (
Garrett Regional Medical Center (grmc-, an affiliate of WVU Medicine, recently opened its Health Information Management Department at the newly renovated facility in downtown Oakland. The move was prompted by the hospital’s recent growth, which includes a nearly 18
percent increase in full-time jobs since 2014.
The main campus of Garrett Regional Medical Center has 55 inpatient beds,
a four-bed intensive care unit, a 10-bed subacute rehabilitation unit, maternity care, a 13-bed outpatient surgical unit with a four-bed surgical suite and around-the- clock emergency services. The hospital’s laboratory, radiology and respiratory departments are equipped with the latest technology. Garrett Regional Medical Center also provides health care services in northern Garrett County, offering primary, urgent and specialty care.
In June, Garrett Regional Medical Center received a $600,000 grant to build a comprehensive behavioral health and addiction program. In applying for the grant, the medical center partnered
with Mountain Laurel Medical Center,
a Federally Qualified Health Center in Oakland, and WVU Medicine’s Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. The new program expects to begin treating patients in early 2019.
Additional medical resources can be found through Garrett County Community Action programs, at Garrett Regional Medical Center and at Mountain Laurel Medical Center. Garrett County Community Action ( provides access to various educational programs, workshops, health assistance and transportation services.
The Mountain Laurel Medical Center ( is currently developing a new two-story, 4,700-square-foot addition to its Oakland facility. The new addition will feature five exam rooms, a behavioral therapy
