T he toddler who wants to touch everything. The elementary-school kid
who wants to climb everything. The teenager who rolls her eyes at everything. It’s your
job to keep them all happy — and Garrett County makes it easy.
Let’s start with our fun festivals that keep kids dancing along to parades, crafting and enjoying treats year-round. Then, run the kids around outdoors — skiing, swimming,
canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, biking and mini-golfing are just a few of the options. And you could always keep them busy collecting firewood in the pristine forestland around your lakeside rental home!
If you’re not sure where to start, get in touch with the nonprofit Garrett Trails organization (garretttrails.org), which can point you to our best spots for hiking and biking, such as the Fork Run Recreation Area (excellent for mountain biking) in the central region and the imposing Big Savage Mountain Trail in the southern region.
If your kids love horses, there are plenty of stables offering outings on horseback (visitdeepcreek.com/list/category/ horseback-riding-78).

Museums can be frustrating for kids eager to touch what they see, but that’s not an issue at The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park (discoverycenterdcl.com). Live animal programs and hands-on exhibits help families explore the wildlife and heritage of Garrett County. Kids of all ages can measure their hands against a black bear’s paw
print or focus a microscope on the region’s underwater ecology. Check the website for regular events such as raptor feedings and crafting sessions.
In summer, cool off at Splash Island at Will O’ the Wisp (facebook.com/splashislandmd), where inflatable slides and obstacles make for a thrilling outing on the water for ages 5 and up.
