 Arts & Entertainment Experiences
   24 The Deep Creek Experience
EntertainYou Our diverse arts community keeps Let Our Sights & Sounds events popping up on calendars and trip-planners every month. You will find art
shows, craft shops, local theater, summer music series and festivals that offer venues to local artists and performers.
The county has two state-designated Arts & Entertainment Districts — in Grantsville and Oakland. Artists, performers
and gallery owners gravitate towards these areas for special resources and incentives, so they are where you will
find concentrations of artists, events and related businesses.
Two umbrella groups drive much of the local arts activity. The Garrett County Arts Council ( has more than 40 years of experience promoting the arts, sponsoring events and making grants to artists and organizations to enrich the local arts scene. The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF, artsandentertainment. org) provides high-quality fine arts performances mainly to enhance the
arts curriculum for high school students. Most performances are at Garrett College during the spring and summer.
The nonprofit Arts Council operates The Gallery Shop in Oakland ( thegalleryshop), showcasing the work of dozens of regional artists. All of the work is for sale all year. The council hosts an Artist Studio Tour in July, when visitors can get a rare look at resident and guest artists at work. The council also produces Art in the Park, a juried art festival with more than 40 artists at Deep Creek Lake State Park (
GLAF partners with HART For Animals
to sponsor the Deep Creek Lake Art, Wine & Beer Festival (deepcreekwinefest. com) each September. The one-day show features beautifully handcrafted works by local and regional artists, more than 200 wines from Maryland and beyond, craft beers, live entertainment, food, a silent auction and more. Proceeds benefit the animal rescue organization and GLAF.
The Theatre on the Lake (, a professional performance company, performs three plays every summer in
the Barn at Ridgeview Valley. Productions include dramas, musicals, comedies and revues. Each June, the company sponsors a readers’ theater, performing new plays submitted by up-and-coming playwrights. Over the past 12 years, the theatre company has supported youth camps, commissions for original works, summer internships for young actors and salaried work for local performers.
