 Outdoor Experiences
       My Deep Creek Experience
“We loved vacationing
in Garrett County
and knew both that
we wanted to spend
as much time there
as possible, and we
wanted to be able to
share it with our family
and friends. We love
getting out on the
water, enjoying the
quiet parks and trails,
the excitement and fun of skiing and tubing, and exploring the many small towns in and around the county. Deep Creek Lake has been the backdrop to our kids’ whole childhoods — a wonderful balance to their urban “real life” — and we can’t imagine a better way for them to have grown up (and more than a decade later, we still spend as much time there as possible!).”

Row Your Boat
Paddleboarders love the serenity of the flat- water lakes and rivers that adorn the Garrett County countryside. Some of the favorite spots are found at Herrington Manor State Park, New Germany State Park, Savage River Reservoir and Broadford Lake Park, which welcome non-gas-powered boats. Local outfitters rent equipment and offer eco- tours around Savage River Reservoir.
Bikes and ORVs
Discover the open roads of Garrett County on a motorcycle or bike. You can also go off- road on the St. John’s Rock ORV Trail and Campground that opened in 2017. Riders can make advance reservations for day use and overnight camping at compass.dnr. maryland.gov/dnrcompassportal.
Explore the county’s beautiful natural environment of lakes, rivers, pastures and rolling mountainsides on the Motorcycle Rides Tour (visitdeepcreek.com/pages/ motorcycleridestour). There are plenty of places to stop along the way to replenish with a light meal and drinks.
Garrett County also has more than 150 miles of mountain-bike trails for beginners to adventurers looking for a jaw-dropping challenge. Margraff Plantation, part
of Savage River State Forest, has two connected loops extending for more than 7 miles, with surfaces that range from a single dirt track to gravel roads. For experienced mountain bikers, there’s also a difficult trail that leads up to the fire lookout tower in Deep Creek Lake State Park. (Maryland law requires helmets for riders under 16, and they’re highly recommended for every rider.)
Golf
Garrett County hosts some of the finest golf courses in the region. Players love the challenging fairways and dazzling scenery. Lodestone Golf Course (wispresort.com/ lodestone), designed by Hale Irwin, has stunning views overlooking Deep Creek Lake. The course also has the highest elevation of any golfing venue in Maryland at 2,973 feet above sea level.
Fantasy Valley Golf Course, formerly known as Wisp Resort Golf Course (wispresort. com/fantasy-valley), has undergone numerous changes over the years and caters to all skill levels.
Oakland Golf Club (golfatoakland.
com) spans 6,395 yards of scenic, rolling terrain and is home to the annual Western Maryland Amateur Championship.
