MAKE Great Memories
TOGETHER
WHEN YOU VACATION WITH KIDS, you want to make sure there’s something
to please each age group, as well as activities for outgoing and shy kids alike.
In Garrett County, you’ll find fun, family- friendly outings around every corner. Do your kids love playing in the snow? Do they like mini golf, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing or just plain exploring? You’ll find it all and more in Deep Creek and Garrett County, Maryland! And let’s not forget about fun seasonal festivals that engage kids with parades, crafts and other activities.
Best of all, many Garrett County attractions blend family fun with educational experiences. Take The Discovery
Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park (discoverycenterdcl.com), which is chock- full of “please touch” displays and live animal programs. Nestled along the shores of the serene lake, the center features environmentally based programs that allow children of all ages to experience a variety of eye-opening exhibits, like measuring their hands against a black bear’s paw print
or focusing a microscope on the region’s underwater ecology. Kids can also exchange glances with owls, hawks, a bald eagle or a golden eagle at the aviary.
Hiking and biking are other treats for the whole family, especially along Garrett County’s many well-maintained routes amid ecological treasures. Or why not explore
the region on horseback? Circle R. Ranch (deepcreeklakestable.com) and Western Trails (westerntrails.net), both in Oakland, lead trail rides for children and adults. During the winter, Circle R. also offers horse- drawn sleigh excursions. For old-fashioned carriage and sleigh rides, Pleasant Valley Dream Rides (pleasantvalleydreamrides. com) is a great option.
Other popular activities include fishing, seasonal corn mazes — like the massive one at the 160- acre Cove Run Farms (coverunfarmscornmaze. com) — and horseback riding at one of the area’s stables (visitdeepcreek.com/list/category/ horseback-riding-78). Or, if you prefer, you can just relax by the fire and feel the stress of daily life slip away.
