The running takes place in the mountains, the swimming portion happens in Deep Creek Lake, and the biking portion of
this September event follows remote roads throughout the county. In 2018, the triathlon is set to take place Sept. 15-16.
When winter arrives, designated trails in our state forests become snowmobile- friendly. It’s a rare treat, but keep in mind that permits are required ($15 annually, available at state park offices).
Find information and maps at the Garrett County Visitors Center located at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541. Maryland law requires helmets for riders under 16, and they’re highly recommended for every rider.
Horseback Riding
Designated trails cater to equestrian pursuits. The majority of visitors don’t have their own horses, and that’s just fine because several stables offer trail rides, lessons and hayrides (visitdeepcreek.com/ list/category/horseback-riding-78). For a magical winter experience, try a horse- drawn sleigh ride (deepcreeklakestable. com or pleasantvalleydreamrides.com). Carriage rides are available too.
Work on Your Swing
One of the biggest challenges about golfing in Garrett County is staying focused on the game instead of
the gorgeous scenery. Consider the impressive Hale Irwin-designed Lodestone Golf Course (wispresort.com/lodestone), which is located on a ridge overlooking Deep Creek Lake. At 2,973 feet above sea level, it boasts the highest elevation of any venue in Maryland. Forty-mile views are par for the course.
Following the natural contours at the base of the ski slopes, the highly rated Fantasy Valley Golf Course, formerly Wisp Resort Golf Course (wispresort.com/fantasy-valley), offers its own splendid scenery and a variety of tee placements to keep golfers of all levels challenged and entertained.
Just minutes from Deep Creek Lake, Oakland Golf Club (golfatoakland.com) hosts the annual Western Maryland Amateur Championship and is known for the high quality of its greens.
Nearby, out-of-county courses include Alpine Lake Resort (alpinelake.com), Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort (rockygapresort. com/golf) and Preston Country Club (prestoncountryclub.com).
If it’s a family outing you’re after, or if you prefer a windmill to a sand trap, consider miniature golf in McHenry or elsewhere in the county (visitdeepcreek.com/list/ category/mini-golf-96).
