Swimming, Diving & More
The sandy beach at Deep Creek Lake State Park beckons swimmers to soak up the sun between dips in the soothing freshwater lake. After building a sand castle or grabbing a quick nap, relax with a nice novel, or enjoy a picnic on the water’s edge. In addition, visitors of all ages can enjoy a wide array
of water sports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding and water tubing, on one of the most gorgeous lakes in the region. Lessons and rentals are available.
Herrington Manor and New Germany State Parks are also swimmer friendly, and Jennings Randolph Lake, off the north branch of the Potomac River, offers scuba diving.
Cast a Line
Many consider the superb fishing at
Deep Creek Lake to be the highlight of a memorable visit. Walleye, yellow perch, bass, trout and northern pike can be caught even in the winter, when ice fishing becomes the norm. Fly-fishing is popular in the Youghiogheny, Savage and Casselman rivers and along the north branch of the Potomac River.
For fishing regulations, check out eregulations.com/maryland/fishing. Licenses are required for those individuals 16 and older.
GARRETT COUNTY IS Dog Friendly
Many lodging options in Garrett County allow dogs, so you can bring your furry friend along on your trip.
There’s also a 40,000-square-foot off-leash dog park at 1263 Bumble Bee Road in Accident, MD, courtesy of the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club, Miranda Gallagher’s Gifted & Talented class at Southern Middle School and HART for Animals. The dog park includes a double-door entry system, waste disposal and separate fenced areas for small and large dogs.
