Nightlife and Events
Nightlife can include listening to bluegrass, rock or country music at the area’s popular taverns. In the summer, you can enjoy live outdoor music at many dining establishments, during downtown Oakland’s Little Yough Summer Music Festival ( ly-schedule.html) and at the Stage Wisp Concert Series (wispresort. com/events).
The Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival ( is another popular event each fall.
Arts and Crafts
The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival ( provides high-quality fine arts performances. The 2018 season includes the Maryland Symphony Orchestra in June and the River City Brass Holiday Concert in December.
Grantsville in the northern reaches of the county is a hub of artistic endeavors. The town, a state-designated Arts & Entertainment District, is known for its popular Spruce Forest Artisan Village, once
a stagecoach stop along the National Road ( Today it is a collection of historic buildings that house studios
and galleries for resident and visiting artists. The village offers a full schedule of classes and workshops from March through November.
Nearby is Penn Alps Restaurant and Crafts Shop (pennalps. com), housed in a former inn; the shop brims with regional artwork all year. Christmas in the Village is a special two-day event each December with luminary-
lit grounds, music, children’s activities and plenty of gift ideas.
Music at Penn Alps ( presents informal Saturday night concerts of mostly classical music with a dash of traditional on several nights. Most of these concerts are in the Great Hall of Penn Alps with some in the Spruce Village Chapel, which is handicapped accessible.
Theatre on the Lake in Deep Creek ( presents a summer series of plays and
a reader’s theater for aspiring playwrights. Since its founding in 2006, the theater has presented more than 50 productions,
and supported youth camps, commissions for original works, summer internships for young actors and salaried work for local performers.
