than 150 miles of trails, ranging from easy to “don’t try this at home.” Margraff Plantation, part of Savage River State Forest, has two connected loops extending for more than seven miles, with surfaces that range from a single dirt track to gravel roads.
Experienced mountain bikers will enjoy the challenge of tackling
a trail that leads up to the fire lookout tower in Deep Creek Lake State Park.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has opened the first-ever trail on its land designed specifically for off- road vehicles (ORVs). The trail, known as St. John’s Rock ORV Trail, opened to the public in July 2017 and is located south of I-68 near the town of Finzel.
The trail features a campsite with large parking areas and a family- friendly zone with children’s trail loops within the campground. There are also loops and
climbs specifically designed for motorcycles, all-terrain and four- wheel-drive vehicles.

to soak up the sun between dips
in the soothing freshwater lake. After building a sandcastle or grabbing a quick nap, relax with a nice novel, or enjoy a picnic on the water’s edge. In addition, visitors of all ages can enjoy a wide array of water sports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding and water tubing, on one of the most gorgeous lakes in the region.
Deep Creek Lake covers 3,900 acres and has 65 miles of shoreline, making this a water paradise perfect for boaters. Take advantage of several marinas, along with boat and personal watercraft rentals. The state park boat launch area
is open 24 hours a day, weather permitting, and the park has a separate launching area for canoes, kayaks and other small watercraft. The Deep Creek Sailing School (deepcreeksailingschool.com) has U.S. Sailing-certified instructors who guide students through water and boat safety, basic sailing, boat handling and racing techniques. Weeklong classes and private lessons are available.
Traveling with kids? Stop by Splash Island at Will O’ the Wisp (facebook.com/splashislandmd), an inflatable water park on Deep Creek Lake. It’s a unique obstacle course that combines fun and fitness.
