Frosty Fun
Wisp Resort ( offers 34 slopes for skiing and boarding. Slopes range from beginner to expert level, with more than 90 percent of the terrain lit for night skiing as well.
If downhill skiing or snowboarding isn’t your speed, try snow tubing (Wisp provides the tube!), ice skating, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Make sure to take
a ride on the Mountain Coaster,
a hybrid alpine slide and roller coaster that whisks you downhill as you take in views of Deep Creek Lake. The Mountain Coaster runs year-round as long as there’s no ice on the track in the winter.
When winter arrives, designated trails in our state forests become snowmobile-friendly. It’s a rare treat, but keep in mind that permits are required ($15 annually, available at state park offices). Find information and maps at the Garrett County Visitors Center located at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541. Maryland law requires helmets for riders under 16, and they’re highly recommended for every rider.
Deep Creek Lake also offers some of the best ice fishing, where the “catch of the day” can include yellow perch, walleye, northern pike, bluegill, pickerel and other local species. Or, for
a magical winter experience, try a horse-drawn sleigh ride F 19
Great Outdoors!
Garrett County’s scenic mountains, byways, lakes, rivers and trails offer up adventure year-round. Marvel at the spring blooms as you hike or bike our trails, soak in the summer sun as you swim in or paddle on Deep Creek Lake, take in the fall foliage while you work on your golf game, or hit the slopes at Maryland’s only ski resort in winter.
