EDUCATION
Delaware County Schools
It’s clear that those who live in Delaware County value learning. The County has some of the best- performing schools in the region.
The area also attracts students from around the world with its exceptional colleges. Here is a look at Delaware County’s schools.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Cabrini University is a Roman Catholic, liberal arts university, located in Radnor Township, within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Cabrini offers more than 35 undergraduate majors with focused tracks and concentrations, plus graduate programs in education, accounting, religion, science and leadership. Students may also design their own major.
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a public, historically black university and one of 14 universities that makes up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Founded as the African Institute in February 1837, Cheyney is the oldest African-American institution of higher learning. Today, Cheyney students represent a variety of races, cultures and nationalities. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 disciplines.
Delaware County Community College has three locations in Delaware County. The Marple Campus is the largest
and is located in Marple Township; the Upper Darby Center and the Southeast Center are located in Sharon Hill. In addition to class offerings, the college provides customized training and other special programs for businesses. Partnerships with Albright College, Delaware Valley University, Drexel University and St. Joseph’s University enable students who finish their associate’s degree to continue their undergraduate education without leaving the college.
Neumann University is a private, Roman Catholic, liberal arts college, sponsored by
the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.
The university offers undergraduate degrees
in a broad variety of subjects, three doctoral programs and six master’s degree programs. The
student-faculty ratio of 14:1 allows professors to provide the personal attention for which Neumann is famous.
Penn State Brandywine, located in Media, Pa., with a current enrollment of 1,700 students, is one of 19 commonwealth campuses of the Pennsylvania State University system. The campus opened in 1967 and was formerly known as Penn State Delaware County and Penn State Lima. The campus offers baccalaureate and associate’s degrees and certificate programs. The campus is located on more than 90 acres, 30 miles from Philadelphia.
Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT) is an independent not-for-profit college, located in both Media and Center City,
Pa. Founded in 1953, PIT offers academic programs organized into associate’s degree and certificate options. The degree option is for students who wish to develop skills for entry- level employment, as well as for those who wish to transfer to a four-year institution.
Saint Joseph’s University is a private, Roman Catholic Jesuit university, located in Philadelphia and the Lower Merion Township. Saint Joseph’s is the seventh oldest Jesuit University in the United States and is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
Swarthmore College is a private liberal arts college located on 425 acres, 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Swarthmore offers more than 600 courses and undergraduate research opportunities in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences.
Widener University is a private university, located in Chester, Pa. Its main campus sits on 110 acres, just 14 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
TECHNICAL SCHOOLS
Brightwood Career Institute offers accelerated higher educational programs that combine flexible schedules and professional instruction to create a rewarding learning experience focused on helping students gain career skills. Brightwood offers programs in allied health, business, criminal justice, nursing, information technology, the trades and continuing education.
Strayer University’s Delaware County campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs in high-demand fields such as accounting, business, criminal justice, education, health services administration, information systems and public administration.
Williamson College of the Trades, located in Media, Pa., provides a three-year, post- secondary trade education to financially deserving young men. Each scholarship awarded includes tuition, room, meals and books for three years. In return, students agree to adhere to Williamson’s values-based curriculum, as well as participate
in the maintenance and daily operations of the campus, thus keeping Williamson’s costs to a minimum compared with other institutions of higher learning.
LOWER, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS
Benchmark School is a private, independent school for children in grades first through eighth who learn differently. Located in Media, Pa., Benchmark serves children from
