About the COUNTY
COMMUNITIES & TOWNS
Prospering Communities
with a Rich History,
DVibrant Sites
elaware County is the region’s work-hard, play-hard neighbor where the people are diverse, the
city melts away into countryside and our history is truly revolutionary. We are the professionals who pump life into the City of Brotherly Love; we bleed Phillies red, Eagles green, Flyers orange and Union blue. We can be discriminating and sophisticated but also down to earth and pretty darn blunt – we are world-renowned art museums and hometown festivals, exquisite gardens and war-torn hometown brew pubs.
We have been welcoming visitors here for hundreds of years. In the mid-1600s, the Swedes and Finns liked us so much they stayed.
We are a region with a personality so big that it has to be divided into parts.
THE MAIN LINE
The term “The Main Line” refers to a group
of towns that run along the former Main Line
of the Pennsylvania Railroad, northwest from downtown Philadelphia. The Delaware County towns of Haverford, Villanova and Wayne run along Route 30 and are part of this suburban group that includes some of the wealthiest communities in the entire country. Here you will find expansive estates, classic architecture and a legacy of “old money” families. As a matter of fact, the Main Line was the setting for the Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn/Jimmy Stewart classic “The Philadelphia Story.” The Main Line is a great place for upscale shopping and fine dining. There are also exquisite hotels and inns and plenty of collegiate events at schools like Villanova University and Haverford College.
CROSSROADS
Our Crossroads section serves as the gateway from Philadelphia to the suburbs. Residents of
these townships and boroughs enjoy a bustling wealth of cultures, cuisines, languages and landscapes. From retailers to restaurants, doctors to dentists, the Crossroads boasts an eclectic
mix of locally owned shops and businesses. Community and cultural offerings such as Lansdowne’s Memorial Day Parade and Upper Darby’s Sikh Parade are just a sampling of the dozens of annual events that enliven these towns. Visitors can easily “pop in” thanks to Upper Darby’s 69th Street public transportation hub
in the center of the action, making it super convenient to enjoy the varied sights, sounds and flavors these communities have to offer.
MAIN STREETS
Our Main Streets are truly the heart of our county – the only section that touches all four other sections. These are communities like Broomall, Media and Springfield, where family activities abound and the feel of hometown Americana
can reach out and grab you. Whether it’s Media’s trolley running right down the middle of State Street, Broomall’s community Fourth of July parade or Springfield’s community pride that can be felt during any home high school football game in the fall...the feeling of nostalgia is palpable. All of these communities have great neighborhood pubs, impressive community theaters and biking and hiking trails to satisfy nature lovers of all types.
RIVERSIDE
The Delaware River is the southern boundary of our county line. The Riverside is made up
of communities like Ridley Park, Tinicum Township and Chester. These are the towns where our “work-hard, play-hard” mentality really takes hold. Our Major League Soccer team, the Philadelphia Union, plays here at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester. Historic
Fort Mifflin is here where guests can stand
on a Revolutionary War battlefield, inside a Civil War prison and next to a magazine that stored gunpowder during World War II, all in one visit. The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is an Important Bird Area as designated by the National Audubon Society. People here tend to have a strong work ethic and sense of local pride that comes from a history of building major American companies such as Scott Paper, Boeing and Sun Oil.
BRANDYWINE
And, finally, there is the Brandywine, the western edge of our county. This is where our landscape changes from suburbia into countryside – filled with historic farmsteads, rolling hills, horse farms, wineries and battlefields. This is the home to the iconic American art family, the Wyeths, and their paintings are on view in a restored
grist mill. A number of wineries, as well as elegant inns and estates, can be found nestled
in our hills. Antique shops and auction houses overflow with treasures and collectibles just waiting to be discovered. And whether you are looking to kayak, canoe, tube, picnic or hike, the Brandywine River is the perfect place to unwind and relax.
