THE MODERN BRONX – IN PERSPECTIVE
 HEALTHCARE
There are many unique and life-affirming aspects to residing in the Bronx, and perhaps chief among them is the state-of-the-art healthcare system available by a coalition of providers that have made the region an exemplar of institutional well-being. It begins with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where many
of the world’s greatest medical scientists are trained. Einstein is accustomed to being at the forefront of innovation and groundbreaking research. In 1964, it became the first U.S. medical school to establish a department of genetics and was the first New York City hospital to establish an academic department of family medicine, as well as the first to create a resi- dency program in internal medicine with an emphasis on women’s health. They have led the way in land- mark research related to liver disease, cancer, AIDS, diabetes, Alzheimers and heart disease. Today,
it runs one of the nation’s largest residency- and fellowship-training programs in the medical and dental sciences. In 1963, Einstein began a historic affiliation with Montefiore Medical Center, which culminated in 2015 when Montefiore assumed
financial and operational responsi- bility for the College of Medicine. Founded in 1884, Montefiore remains a world-renowned health- care facility that was a U.S. News & World Report top-10 hospital in New York City as recently as
2016. It was the first hospital to establish a department of social medicine and the first home- healthcare agency in the U.S. Montefiore maintains a longstand- ing tradition of industry-leading care while overseeing one of the five busiest emergency depart- ments in the country.
Another Albert Einstein affiliate is the esteemed NYC Health+Hospitals/ Jacobi. One of the largest medical facilities in the city, Jacobi is home to the only burn unit and Level I pediatric trauma center in the Bronx, further enhancing its renown in the field of pediatric healthcare. Jacobi even has the only snakebite treatment center
in the Tri-State area. Another Bronx-based giant of healthcare is the 127-year-old Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. Bronx-Lebanon has been perennially
lauded for its outstanding outpatient services, boasting a Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home designation (the highest available) from the National Center for Quality Assurance. In 2017, Bronx-Lebanon received full accreditation from the Joint Commis- sion, the leading accrediting authority for hospitals
in the nation.
For hospice and palliative care, meanwhile, the standard-bearer is the venerable Calvary Hospital in Morris Park. Calvary stands today as the country’s only fully accredited acute-care specialty hospital devoted exclusively to providing palliative care to adult patients with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. It has an unbroken track record of accreditation from the Joint Commission and
has enjoyed an incredible 12 consecutive years in the 99th percentile for patient satisfaction, as confirmed by Press Ganey.
