Part living history museum, part environmental education center, the Newlin Grist Mill is a perfect combination of Delco’s heritage and beauty. The 160-acre park that surrounds the grounds’ 12 historic structures offers eight miles of hiking trails, pond and stream fishing, and native plant gardens. Guided tours of the 1704 Grist Mill are avail- able daily, but there are also scheduled demonstrations of other 18th-century skills and trades such as woodturning, paper making, candle making, and more. While there is an admission cost for the mill tour, there is no charge to hike
the trails or have a picnic by the creek, making it the perfect place to “mill about” for an afternoon.

Much of America cel- ebrates our country’s independence from Britain on the Fourth of July, but truth be told, it should really be recognized on the many days before and after that date when the colonists fought (and died) in pursuit of that dream. Those battles were fought in places like Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown; but the largest engage- ment of the American Revolution
was the Battle of Brandywine on
Sept. 11, 1777. More than 30,000 troops filled our countryside, half defending Philadelphia from British invasion, half trying to take it. The list of men who were here reads like a Who’s Who from a history textbook — Washington, Lafayette, Monroe, Hamilton (yes, that Hamilton), Howe, and Cornwallis. Today, visitors can tour Washington’s headquarters, witness a reenactment or just wander the grounds to reflect on those soldiers’ sacrifices, which helped make us the country we know today.
