DZUL DANCE fuses dance with aerial and circus arts as a means to communicate indigenous pre-Hispanic, Mexican and Latin cultures.
By transforming bodies into earthbound and airborne forces of nature, Dzul breaks physical, cultural and political boundaries. This daring and unique company connects the ancient and the modern in order to illuminate the vast array of drama and beauty inherent in the natural world and the human condition.
Dzul Dance’s intense physicality and creative appeal have won them invitations nationally and internationally to perform at the United Nations, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Banff Centre for the Arts, Kaye Playhouse, CUNY Graduate Center, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Festival Internacional Cervantino, National Dance Week (NYC), Gunvor Festival (Switzerland), and many others.
Artistic Director Javier Dzul has one of the most impressive and exotic résumés in modern dance. He grew up in the jungles of Yucatán, the last king of a remote Mayan tribe. Mayan ritual dance was in his blood. Dzul
left his home at 16 to study and dance professionally with Ballet Folkorico de Mexico and the National Ballets of Mexico and Cuba. Martha Graham brought him to the U.S. Since arriving in New York City, he has performed with the Martha Graham Dance Company and Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, among others.
