Caring for Families in Court: An Essential Approach to Family Justice
A transformative shift in family court system guiding principles, structure and operation based on an ethic of care and narrative practice is the vision of Prof. Barbara Babb’s book, Caring for Families in Court: An Essential
Approach to Family Justice, published in 2018 by Routledge.
Babb is an associate professor at UB Law and director of its Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts. She and her co-author, Judith Moran, argue
that reforms to the family justice system are necessary to enable it to effectively assist families and children.
The Baron & the Marquis: Liberty, Tyranny, & the Enlightenment Maxim That Can Remake American Criminal Justice
Prof. John Bessler’s ninth book, The Baron & the Marquis: Liberty, Tyranny, & the Enlightenment Maxim That Can Remake American Criminal Justice, was published in 2019 by Carolina Academic Press. The Baron & the Marquis explores the history of the maxim that articulates what is now known as the parsimony principle: that any punishment that goes beyond necessity is “tyrannical.”
Bessler shows the maxim’s modern-day
implications for capital punishment, prolonged
and mass incarceration. The author argues that unnecessary punishments violate the U.S. Constitution’s Eighth Amendment as “excessive” and “cruel and unusual.”
The Fundamentals of Estate Planning
(Maryland), Second Edition
Prof. Angela Vallario’s book, published in 2019 by Carolina Academic Press, was written for those studying or practicing estate planning in Maryland, as well as students preparing for the Uniform Bar Exam. The book brings the practical aspect of trusts and estates into the classroom by explaining concepts in a real-life manner.
The text provides practical problems and illustrations with suggested responses that explain the material at a sophisticated, yet accessible, level. The book addresses Maryland, Uniform Probate Code and federal statutes. The second edition is fully up-to-date on recent legislation, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the Trust Act.
