Victor Battaglia, Esq. ’51
During his time at Salesianum, Victor Battaglia was a consistent Honor Roll student. His academic achievement was particularly strong in the languages. Known as a
serious student with a wicked sense of humor, Victor was active in Student Council, with an eye on medicine or law. After his time at 8th and West, Victor graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 1955. Later, at Georgetown University, Victor earned a Juris Doctorate in 1958. He continued his scholarly pursuits, earning a Samuel Williston Fellowship from 1958 to 1960.
In his career, Victor was a formidable defense attorney, considered by many as the best in the state. His work and professionalism were recognized by the Committee of 39 Good Government Award and the New Castle County Outstanding Service Award in 1980. This was followed by the Herbert Harley Award in 1982, the Delaware State Bar Association Award in 1990, and the United Way Award in 1993. His pro bono work as an attorney and as a private citizen has led him to serving many hours in community and government service.
Distinction in 2000, the Thomas C. Maloney Community Service Award in 2008, the Academy of Medicine Award in 2008, the Best Lawyers in America from 1999 to present, the G. Filliam Award from the American Heart Association in 2014, the St. Thomas More Society Award in 2015, and the State of Delaware Tribute Award in 2015. A former member of Salesianum’s
Board of Trustees, he portrays the school’s gentle strength in professional and scholarly acumen, in the courts specifically and in the community in general. His career, a clear narrative of hard work and success, is more importantly punctuated by a Salesian spirit of serving the greater good.
