ANNUAL MATT G. LEGACY EVENT Raises Funds for Scholarship
On Sunday, September 15, friends and family of Matthew Griffith ’19 gathered to celebrate his memory at the third annual Matt G. Legacy Event at
Sam’s Picnic Grounds in the Blackbird Forest near Smyrna.
“We’ve been thrilled with the response each of the past few years. Even in the rain, people still come to have a good time, listen to great music and share in some of the Salesian spirit — it’s really gratifying,” explained Matthew’s father, Steve Griffith, one of the event organizers.
The Matt G. Legacy Event is a day-long festival featuring the finest local blues musicians and, at this most recent outing, national blues act Packrat’s Smokehouse. While the music takes center-stage, the expansive grounds offer guests a chance to relax, play games, win great prizes
in the silent auction and enjoy fantastic barbecue. All proceeds from the event fund the Matthew P. Griffith ’19 Memorial Scholarship at Salesianum, which now has
a contributed balance of $40,000 from more than 200 different individuals.
Lisa Griffith, Matthew’s mother, remarked, “Each year, everyone always has so much fun. Everything — the venue, the music, the food, the atmosphere — is special. I hope more people will consider coming to spend some time with us and supporting the scholarship.”
