Visitors can rent kayaks to glide across the Hudson in Cold Spring, visit a small sandy beach at Little Stony Point State Park, or rent a pontoon boat for exploring Lake Mahopac. Few families visit the area without making
a stop at Brewster’s Red Rooster Drive-In, where countless young-at-heart patrons have enjoyed sumptuous burgers, juicy hot dogs, and savory clam rolls at this retro-styled, road fast food stand.
For parents looking for educational oppor- tunities for their kids, the Taconic Outdoor Education Center in Cold Spring sponsors year-round environmental programs. The center hosts special events such as Winterfest, Maple Sunday, Outdoor Rec Fest and Naturally Nocturnal.
Cold Spring’s Putnam History Museum sheds light on the region’s storied past, and its pivotal role in the revolutionary war. Its West Point Foundry Preserve serves as an “outdoor museum” of one of the most important sites in the American industrial revolution. The Southeast Museum in Brewster offers exhibits on the surrounding
town, as well as Putnam County history. The museum is also located in one of the county’s largest landmarks, the 1896 Old Town Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
