Sara goes holiday shopping at Valmontone

It’s the Christmas season and Sara is going to Valmontone Fashion District Outlets with mamma and nonna to buy regali (gifts). During her trip she’ll help you learn the names for clothing and introduce some new colors.
Mamma and nonna are all excited. They’ve heard there are
some great saldi (sahl-dee) sales at the Valmontone Fashion District Outlets, and they are planning a trip on sabato (sah-bah-toe) Saturday. I’m happy too because I know I’ll be going along. Valmontone allows puppies to come with their families, and I always get to meet other puppies. During Christmas they always have beautiful decorations, you
can meet Babbo Natale and they even have pattinaggio sul ghiaccio (pa-tee-na-joe sul gee-a-cho) ice skating!
We are up early on Saturday and all hop in the car. Mamma drives to the autostrada (ow-toe-strah-dah) highway which will take us to Valmontone. The ride takes about 20 minutes. I sit on nonna’s grembo (grem-boe) lap and look out the window at le montagne (lay mone-tan-yey) the mountains and le peccore (lay peh-coor-a) the sheep that are in the fields. We get off the highway and mamma pays il pedaggio (eel pay-da-joe) the toll and then drives along a long curvy road to get to the outlets.
It takes a few minutes to find parking and I am whining because I want to scendere della macchina (shen-dair-a del-la mah-key-na) get out of the car and get started. The outlet has all its walkways outdoors with i negozi (ee neh-go-zee) the stores built around them. There are lots of beautiful fontane (phone ta-nay) fountains and benches where people can also sit and relax. Our first stop is the lingerie store, mamma and nonna always buy le calze (lay cahlz-zay) socks and i calzini (ee cahlz-zee-knee) stockings in this store. One of mamma’s favorite stores here is Inverso and we head over there to check out the sales. Mamma holds me in her arms so someone doesn’t step on me! Nonna finds due maglie (doo-a my-yay) two sweaters she loves, una è verde e l’altra è nera (oo-na
a vair-day a lal-tra a nair-a) one is green and the other is black. Mamma tries on una camicia gialla (oo-na cah-me-cha ja-la) a yellow shirt and pantaloni bianchi (pahn-ta-low-knee bee-ahn-key) white pants. Nonna finds una gonna (oo-na go-na) a skirt she likes but it is arancione (a rahn-cho-nay) orange and she doesn’t like that color. They pay for their purchases while I wait patiently.
Near Inverso is a great candy store. Evviva (A vee-va) Hooray! You should see all the candy they sell, ciocolatti (cho-co-lah-tee) chocolates, and nuts and best of all gelato! Mamma picks nocciola (no-cho-la) hazelnut flavor with panna (Pa-na) whipped cream and asks for some extra spoons so I can have some too. We sit on a bench outside the store and all enjoy our ice cream in the warm sun. We walk over to Kiko next. I always like going here because the sales clerks make
a big fuss over me. They sell really pretty trucco (true-ko)
makeup and mamma and nonna stock up on fardo (far-doe) blush. Nonna buys a fardo rosa (far-doe rose-a) pink blush and mamma buys smalto (small-toe) nail polish and ombretto marrone (ome-bret-oh ma-rone-a) brown eye shadow.
It was a fun day. Buon Natale a tutti!

As we celebrate Italian Heritage Month,
Americans and Americans who have a love for “everything Italian” are music, festivals and Italian history.
