Ciro Poppiti III has been appointed the new board president of Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition effective July 1. He will be supported by vice president Matt Stehl, treasurer Bradley Slaney and secretary
Sue Bowlby.
Poppiti has formerly served on the
DBCC board as secretary, treasurer and vice president. He serves as New Castle County register of wills since being elected in 2010. Under his leadership, the office launched an innovative program that has audited over $150 million in unaccounted assets, netting some $2.3 million in “found” money for New Castle County.
Ciro has also released “Delaware Estate Administration,” a how-to manual which,
for the first time, unifies statewide policy on what happens when someone dies. The result of Delaware Estate Administration has been to protect seniors by streamlining the probate process. For his efforts, Ciro was awarded
the 2015 Government Service Award by the Delaware Bar Association.
Ciro was born and raised in Wilmington.
He is a graduate of Salesianum School, Princeton University, Delaware Law School and the Army Law School. He is a member of the Delaware Bar. Ciro serves as a
Judge Advocate (lawyer) in the Delaware Army National Guard. In 2007, Ciro was recognized for being a civic activist and received the Wilmington Award from Mayor James Baker for outstanding community service. He is active in the Italian-American community and was the founding chairman of the Delaware Commission on Italian Heritage and Culture. Ciro is an adjunct professor at Wilmington University, teaching law, government, philosophy, and history. He writes frequently and has written a regular column for several publications over the years. Ciro and his wife Laura have two children, Jake and Louise.
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition extends a warm welcome to the two newest members of the board, Dr. Avani Virani and Judi Pflaumer.
Dr. Virani is board-certified in internal medicine and hospice-palliative care medicine. She is medical director of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware.
Avani is also a physician with Vitas Hospice. Avani has been appointed by Gov. Carney to Behavioral Health Consortium that is chaired by Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long. In addition, she was also appointed by Gov. Carney to the Addiction Action Committee that is chaired by Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of Delaware Division of Public Health.
