John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum
> FWS.gov/Refuge/John_Heinz
This refuge, made possible by significant community support, is a sanctuary for both humans and animals. Named for the U.S. senator who died in a plane crash nearby, the refuge is a wooded oasis amidst the city’s concrete landscape. Guests can explore a labyrinth of trails — either through guided nature walks or
on their own — and explore a rich diversity of fish, wildlife, and plants native to the Delaware Estuary. Visitors can even go “off-road” if they bring a kayak or canoe and paddle down the
4.5 mile tidal segment of Darby Creek that flows through the refuge. Admission is free.
