September 11. For Americans today, that day brings thoughts of our nation under attack, heroes and patriots rushing into chaos, and tremendous loss of life. In a brutal twist of historic fate, that day evoked those same feelings for American colonists 240 years ago. On September 11, 1777, the largest battle of the American Revolution unfolded in the fields, farms, and homesteads along the Brandywine River. Today, this hallowed ground is protected by more than 500 contiguous acres and is the site of re-enactments, historical tours, school field trips, and, most importantly, a memorial to the soldiers who sacrificed everything for a country yet to be born.
