access to the larger metropolitan areas on the main- land,” says Sarah Dean, a Queen Anne’s County native. “Kent is the gateway to the Eastern Shore” — and a wonderful place to have a second home.
Real estate properties range from smaller residen- tial neighborhoods inland to extraordinary water- front estates overlooking the bay. Many offer views of Kent Island’s spectacular sunsets. Annapolis
Not strictly a coastal town, Annapolis is both our state capital and a former capital of the United States. It houses both the U.S. Naval Academy and St. John’s College (among the oldest colleges in the country) and is an international mecca for sailing and boating enthusiasts. The city’s downtown is famous for its historic architectural facades and winding brick streets. It hosts some of the finest restaurants in the region, among them Harry Brown’s, Osteria 177, and Carrol’s Creek Cafe with its spectacular water views. Nearby, an active arts district hosts art galleries and music venues. Sandy Point State Park, with its wide expanse of beach, is just a quick drive outside the city, as is easy boating access at Herring Bay and great shop-
ping at Annapolis Towne Centre or Arundel Mills. “It’s really a unique place,” says Annapo- lis resident Regina Sixta. “A state capital with no skyscrapers. Just cobblestone streets, old churches, historic homes, unique shops, eateries, restaurants, bakeries, butchers, St. John’s Col- lege, the Naval Academy, and plenty of histo- ry....” And these are just some of the reasons she has stayed in the area for almost two decades. With centuries of political and maritime history, Annapolis attracts more than 4 million visitors each

year, though not all of the city is as busy as down- town. Neighborhoods such as Eastport, just across Spa Creek, have many options for those who want a little distance from downtown. Whether you’re looking for the perfect waterview investment or a spacious Federal-style home, you can find it in Annapolis.
